Materials and Tools

Here are some of the basic materials needed for building a homemade upside down tomato planter:

  • A container. You may use a trash can or a 5 gallon bucket, or another similar container. It's important that the chosen container is strong but also light enough. Garbage cans are a good choice because they tend to be smaller than buckets and not as heavy, which is definitely an advantage for an upside down tomato planter. Whatever you choose, make sure that it's made of plastic.
  • A knife or a drill. You will need it to cut the hole in the bottom of the container.
  • Wire, twine or a similar material.
  • An S-hook to hang the planter.
  • Seedlings or tomato plants you wish to grow.
  • Quality potting soil mix.

Instructions

It's very easy to make the planter. All you need to do is to turn your container upside down and make a hole in the center of the bottom. Make sure that the hole is about 3 inches in diameter.

After this, take your tomato plant, turn it upside down and place it carefully through the hole. Fill the container with potting soil so it covers the roots of your upside down tomato plus several more inches.

The next step is to make a handle. Drill small hole on each side of the container and thread twine through the holes. This will make a good handle for the planter.

Finally, you should simply hand your new plant on an S hook. Make sure to hang it on a sturdy enough structure. You may also use a strong tree branch.
